Allen & Overy settles Jewish discrimination case

Allen & Overy has settled a bitter discrimination suit with a former employee in its New York office.

Last year (21 December) The Lawyer reported that associate, Norman Schoenfeld, filed proceedings against the magic circle firm after he was fired from the New York office in October.

As an observant Jew Schoenfeld was required to take time off for religious holidays during his three month employment with the firm from August to October last year.

Schoenfeld, employed by partner Mark Wojciechowski in the leveraged finance team, claimed he informed Allen & Overy before taking up his post but was later told he was required to work during Jewish holidays on Fridays and Saturdays.

He alleged his employment was terminated because of his religion and the time off required to observe religious holidays.

Allen & Overy claims his employment came to an end at the firm during his trial period based purely on performance.

In a statement released by the firm, Allen & Overy, said: “The parties have resolved the case and we anticipate that it will be closed in the near future.”

Schoenfeld instructed Anne Vladeck of Vladeck Waldman Elias & Engelhard while Allen & Overy was advised Rene Fleming from Morgan Lewis & Bockius.
