TfL general counsel joins Severn Trent

Transport for London’s (TfL) general counsel Fiona Smith has quit after just over two years in the role.

Smith, who joined TfL in autumn 2003 is leaving at the end of the year to join Severn Trent as general counsel and company secretary. She will be replaced temporarily by Peter McGuirk.

During her time at TfL, Smith slashed the Government agency’s legal function by nearly 50 per cent, making up to 40 lawyers redundant. She also completed a major shake-up of TfL external legal advisers, which resulted in only Eversheds being retained to handle high-volume work.

TfL is responsible for all of the capital’s transport needs, including London Underground, London Buses and the Congestion Charge.
