Indian firm Khaitan & Co has made three lateral partner hires to strengthen its banking, infrastructure and TMT practices.
Asim Abbas, Amitabh Sharma and Shishir Mehta all joined Khaitan as partners at the beginning of this month.
Sharma will join the firm’s infrastructure practice in New Delhi, while Abbas and Mehta will join its Mumbai office, focusing on TMT and banking and finance respectively.
“They’re all specialists and they bring with them specialist experience,” said Khaitan partner Rabindra Jhunjhunwala.
Mehta, who will launch Khaitan ’s banking practice in Mumbai, joins the firm from White & Case’s New York office, where he was an associate. Sharma was a partner at J Sagar Associates.
Abbas joins Khaitan two years after founding Delhi TMT boutique Legal Spectrums, which has been incorporated into Khaitan. Abbas will be the firm’s first dedicated TMT partner and joins the firm along with one associate from his old firm.
“We’ve done bits of media and entertainment but they were usually one-off cases,” explained Jhunjhunwala. “[Abbas] brings with him specialist media and entertainment experience and we’re going to use that to build on our existing telecoms practice.”
Khaitan has also promoted three associates to its partnership. Joy Jacob, Ashwin Mathew and Savita Singh, who were all associates in the firm’s Mumbai office, which is its largest, will focus on infrastructure, corporate work and real estate, respectively.
The round of promotions is a slight rise on last year when two associates were made up.
