There will be more than one lawyer wondering what SJ Berwin mediation chief David Shapiro’s secret of everlasting youth is.

At the age of 80 the mediator might be leaving the firm, but he’s not giving up on the job altogether, as keeping active is the key to staying youthful.

Shapiro is going freelance after being given the opportunity to advise on class actions in the UK and over in the US. To avoid any possible conflicts of interest, it was decided that freelancing was his best option.

SJ Berwin felt that his contribution to alternative disputes, both at the firm and across the profession, needed to be marked. So from this summer the firm will be holding an annual alternative dispute resolution lecture named ‘The David Shapiro Annual: Outrage’.

Why such an unusual title? SJ Berwin said it captures his passion for the fearless pursuit of justice, free speech and human rights.

The firm added: “It also seeks to convey his relish for killing sacred cows in inventing new solutions to take the rage out of disputes in court.”

Certainly, one of the more florid tributes we have received.Get the latest news and an irreverent commentary delivered to your desktop every day by subscribing to Lawyer News Daily.
