In brief: Sports lawyer wins damages action

Sports lawyer Nick Trainer has been given “substantial” damages by The Sun for a story which suggested he had embarrassed England soccer coach Terry Venables. The article centred on the application by Trainer, Venables' solicitor and a partner with John Bowden, Trainer & Co, to become an agent for soccer players. David Price, who acted for Trainer in the High Court hearing last week, said the article, headed “Tel's mate drops him in it”, implied the application put Venables in “considerable difficulties” with the Football Association. Price, of David Price & Co, said the piece suggested a conflict of interest arose from the dual professional status. He said the defendants, News Group Newspapers and journalist Ben Bacon, now accepted that the suggestion of embarrassment was untrue. Trainer was also given an unqualified apology by the defendant's lawyer Julian Pike at the hearing last Friday.
