Lovells (Richard Lewis) advised Unum, the UK subsidiary of UnumProvident, on the acquisition of the UK group insurance business of Sun Life of Canada. Clifford Chance advised Sun Life of Canada.

Barlow Lyde & Gilbert (Keith Snedden) acted for Teather & Greenwood Holdings on the sale of part of Teather & Greenwood Investment Management to Prudential-Bache for £3.65m. Prudential-Bache was advised by Debevoise & Plimpton.

Lovells (Thomas Schrell) ad-vised Westfälisch-Lippischer Sparkassen-und Giroverband on the acquisition of a 50 per cent share in WPS Bank for £140m from WestLB. WestLB was advised in-house.

Berwin Leighton Paisner (BLP) (Adrian Magnus) acted for the Office of Government Commerce in relation to the Government's Procurement Card Programme, which is expected to save the Government more than £200m. BLP's team worked with the Treasury Solicitor's Department.

Slaughter and May (Andy Ryde) advised Charter in relation to the announcement of accounting irregularities affecting its air and gas-handling business in North America.

Uría & Menéndez (Juan Gonzalez) acted for CVC Capital Partners in the acquisition of electricity transmission grid Iberdrola Distribucion Electrica for e934.6m (£615.7m). Red Electrica, advised by Clifford Chance, acquired a 25 per cent indirect participation from CVC.

Slaughter and May (Francis Murphy, Nilufer von Bismarck) advised Marconi Communications in relation to amendments to its outsourcing arrangements with Jabil Circuit. Jabil Circuit advised by Hammonds.

Nicholson Graham & Jones (Owen Waft) advised Ross Group on its £3m open offer, capital reorganisation, £1.4m loan facility and waiver of Rule 9 of the City Code on Takeovers and Mergers.
