It went really badly, but at the end he was asked how much he’d spent on travelling to the interview. Rather sheepishly, he replied, “one ninety-nine”, meaning the two quid he’d spent on the bus trip. The following week he received a cheque in the post from Freshfields for £199. He kept it.
