One of Tulkinghorn’s scribes was devastated last week when she received a call from Denton Wilde Sapte. Her impending lunch with the firm’s ebullient managing partner Howard Morris had been cancelled.
The poor hack was obviously gutted – she was going to have to pay for her own trough that day. But more than that, this was the third time in recent weeks that Morris had blown her out. Did the great man have something against her? she wondered.
A call to Morris’s PA set the record straight. The lunch was due to take place during Passover, and Morris, a Jew, would be fasting.
No vendetta, then: Morris would just prefer not to have to sit and watch one of Tulkinghorn’s finest tuck in. And who can blame him?
