Tulkinghorn always assumed that senior partners do little but swan around in taxis having lunch with international statesmen and tame clients.

But one senior partner of a top 10 firm was at pains to point out otherwise. “Everyone wants to know the job is being done, but nobody wants to do it,” he told Tulkinghorn gloomily. “It’s like being a public executioner or a lavatory cleaner.”

Tulkinghorn just hopes he’s got the rubber gloves.
