CMS partner wins Informa GC role

Publisher Informa has appointed its first general counsel picking its CMS Cameron McKenna relationship partner John Burton.

Burton has been Informa’s key outside counsel for a number of years. He advised the company on its $1.4bn acquisition of US conference organiser IIR in 2005 and its £1.1bn merger with publisher Taylor & Francis in 2004.

David Gilbertson, managing director of Informa told The Lawyer the reasons for appointing its first legal chief: “We’ve been growing at an accelerated rate over the last couple of years. This business is now very much bigger and more international and we thought the time is right to bring our legal expertise in house.”

Burton said: “As much as I’ve enjoyed my 18 years at Camerons this is an opportunity that might not come along again.”

Gilbertson said that the company brought in external recruiters to identify the best candidates in the market and Burton had the right set of skills in addition to the existing relationship with Informa.

Burton is due to start in June and will also take up the role of group company secretary.
