Irwin Mitchell promotes non-lawyer ahead of ABS conversion
Irwin Mitchell has promoted four lawyers into its partnership, while a partner and non-lawyer have been made members of the firm, the equivalent of being awarded equity status.

The appointments, which come into effect on 1 May, will take the number of partners at Irwin Mitchell to 174.
Adding to the non-lawyer contingent of members is Sheffield-based operations director Gary Jackson, while personal injury partner Jonathan Betts, who heads the firm’s spinal injury team in Manchester, has also been promoted to become a member.
In Sheffield, the firm has added property lawyer Tom Hall to it its business legal services division while contentious probate specialist Adam Draper and motor specialist Phil Tomkinson join the office’s personal injury practice.
In Manchester, the firm has promoted finance litigation specialist Tom Seabrook.
Group chief executive John Pickering said the additions would be a boost as the firm prepares for conversion to an ABS. Earlier this year the firm appointed former PricewaterhouseCoopers vice-chairman Glyn Barker as executive chairman to help develop its plans (16 January 2012).
Of the partner appointments Pickering said: “It underlines our commitment to developing people from all areas within Irwin Mitchell, including again people from a non-legal background, and recognises their achievements and the contribution from every part of Irwin Mitchell in supporting our growth strategy.”
This year’s promotions round is down from last year when the firm made up seven partners across its network of offices outside London.
