Irwin Mitchell change agent Pickering to exit firm

Who is Andrew Tucker? The Irwin Mitchell partner has today been unveiled as the firm’s new group chief executive officer succeeding John Pickering. Those are big boots to fill.

Between 2007/08, when Pickering was first promoted from personal injury (PI) head to managing partner, and 2012/13, Irwin Mitchell has pushed revenues up by more than £50m, increased its partnership by 71 and grown lawyer headcount by 227.

Pickering put in place plans to diversify the core PI business, making headlines when the firm hired a four-partner team from legacy SJ Berwin back in 2010, including real estate head Jon Vivian. Eyebrows were raised inside many a City firm when this so-called northern firm dared to venture outside its comfort zone into the world of commercial law.

The firm was the first to gain five – yes, five – ABS licences while it also overhauled its management team to install non-legal management (chairman Glyn Barker joined from PwC and CFO Andrew Merrick from AIM-listed airline company Dart Group). Despite this, Irwin Mitchell isn’t straying too far from its roots.

Tucker is a PI man straight from Irwin Mitchell’s homeland of Sheffield. His appointment comes as the firm secured a £90m funding package to take it to its next stage.

The next five years will no doubt be as transformative as the last. It’s just that Pickering, the man who has done more than most to drive that change, won’t be around to see it.
