Top commercial litigation partner defects for in-house role
DJ Freeman has lost a commercial litigation partner to the Institute of Practitioners in Advertising (IPA), where she has taken up the role of legal director. Marina Palomba joins the IPA after three years as a partner at DJ Freeman. The organisation represents 80 per cent of advertising agents in the UK, including market leaders such as Saatchi & Saatchi. All of its members are effectively potential clients for Palomba. As a stopgap over the last six months, the IPA has used the Simkins Partnership to carry out the function of in-house adviser. It was carried out previously by Simon Gallant, a consultant at Mishcon De Reya. Palomba said she has always been interested in advertising law. Unusually for a lawyer, she already has a Chartered Institute of Marketing Diploma.
"I'm advising advertising agents, but they're in the IPA, so you don't have some of the pressures" Marina Polomba, IPA
Palomba said her new role offers her the "best of both worlds. I'm advising advertising agents like Saatchi & Saatchi as I would a client in private practice, but they're members of the IPA, so you don't have timesheets and some of the other pressures of being in private practice. You're still offering an efficient and first-class service as you would in private practice." Palomba said she hopes to be the first port of call for IPA members in need of legal advice. She will do as much as she can in-house, but will also call on external advisers. She is now considering the possibility of setting up a panel of firms. The work covers all aspects of advertising law, including copyright and trademark issues and matters brought before the Advertising Standards Authority. "It's a fascinating area of law," she said. "It's exciting and tangible." At DJ Freeman, Palomba advised clients such as Corus, Shell and Mohamed Al Fayed.
