An international student mooting competition focusing on investment protection will take place in Frankfurt on 22 March, judged by International Court of Justice president Judge Peter Tomka.
Fifty teams from 25 countries will meet for the sixth round of the Frankfurt Investment Arbitration Moot Court at which they will argue before arbitration tribunals of investment treaty specialists.
The 2013 event involves a case study dispute based on the fictional Arctic Charter Treaty of 1911.
Competition founder and McDermott Will & Emery partner Sabine Konrad specialises in international arbitration. She said: “Investment protection forms an integral part of international economic law and opens up many interesting international professional perspectives for law students and young practitioners.
“Participation in a student moot competition strongly enhances knowledge of international investment protection law and its dispute resolution mechanisms through their application to a concrete case problem.”
Best advocate winner will be awarded the McDermott Will & Emery Scholarship for an LLM in international and comparative dispute settlement at Queen Mary School of International Arbitration in London. Each member of the winning team will also receive a three-week placement at The Hague Academy of International Law.
This year’s teams come from Belarus, China, Czech Republic, Ethiopia, France, Georgia, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Jamaica, Luxembourg, Malta, Nepal, New Zealand, Nigeria, Poland, Russia, Singapore, South Korea, Sweden, Spain, Ukraine, United Kingdom, USA and Vietnam.
