FTSE 250 outsourcer Serco has hired BT Global general counsel David Eveleigh as its legal chief in the wake of accusations that it overcharged the Government for electronic tagging.
After a 2013 Government review revealed that Serco and G4S had both overbilled the Ministry of Justice, in some cases charging to monitor non-existent tags, Serco resolved to install a general counsel as part of what it termed a “corporate renewal programme”.
Eveleigh has been appointed to the newly created position and also takes over as company secretary, replacing John Hickey, who will remain with the company.
The general counsel position is currently being filled on an interim basis by former Clifford Chance litigation partner Katrina Allison. She left Clifford Chance in 2009 to take up a secondment at the SFO and has since worked as a freelance fraud consultant.
A spokesperson for Serco said: “This is a new role established as part of our corporate renewal programme developed following some of the issues that occurred in the business last year.”
Eveleigh, who has been with BT since 2001, has held a number of roles at the telecoms giant, including chief counsel at BT global services and general counsel for BT Americas, which saw him work from California. He returned to the UK to take up his current role in 2009.
A keen supporter of legal process outsourcing (22 October 2012), Eveleigh will join Serco in November.
At BT Eveleigh will be replaced by Liz Walker, who is currently vice-president in the CEO Office at BT Global. She was previously chief counsel for EMEA and Latin America at BT and has also worked in the US for BT’s international outsourcing company Syncordia and for BT in Germany.
