BT has hired a new competition general counsel from Sky following last year’s internal restructuring of BT Retail and a subsequent reorganisation of the telecoms company’s legal teams.
Bruce Breckenridge, formerly principal legal adviser at Sky with more than 15 years experience, has joined BT as its new group head for competition and regulatory.
The new role has been created in response to the significantly growing levels of competition matters at the company and the split last year of BT Retail into two divisions, BTConsumer and BTBusiness.
BT said that given the increasing importance of competition and regulatory law, and its impact on the realisation of its strategies and revenues, had resulted in its decision to centralise responsibility for these matters.
Consequently it has recruited Breckenridge, a specialist competition lawyer who worked at Sky for more than 11 years and was formerly an associate in the competition team at Allen & Overy for nearly five years.
Breckenridge will now lead BT’s team of 16 competition lawyers and act as the principal point of contact for BT’s senior executives.
“This is a very exciting time to be joining BT, given the growing significance of competition law and regulatory issues,” said Breckenridge.
Nigel Paterson, who had previously had responsibility for competition matters, will continue as general counsel for BT Consumer, a role that has expanded considerably largely because of the launch and growth of BT Sport (2 December 2013).
BT recently appointed outsourcing company Axiom as its legal process outsourcing (LPO) provider, following a review of its previous relationship with US outfit United Lex (30 September 2013). The appointment will see Axiom take responsibility for the end-to-end negotiation of a wide variety of commercial contracts across the UK, US and Asia, for a three-year period.
