Derek Wheatley QC is taking a second shot at the private Bar after 17 years working as an in-house barrister.
Wheatley has begun practice at Michael Edward QC's Verulam chambers.
Since leaving private practice 17 years ago, he has been chief legal adviser at Lloyds Bank for 15 years and a legal adviser for London law firm Watson Farley & Williams for the last two years.
Wheatly, who claims to be the only barrister who has a press card, writes regularly for the national and legal press. He is a member of the Joint Bar and Law Society Banking Law Committee and the Bar Association for Commerce, Finance and Industry.
At his new chambers he will be specialising in banking work but will also be involved in commercial lit- igation and criminal work. He has several years' experience in mediation and favours it as a way of resolving banking disputes.
Wheatley said: "My work as an in-house barrister has given me tremendous experience and an insight into dealing with banking customer disputes. My main attribute is that I've done all the work before. I've even defended a capital charge of murder."
