A report containing the Law Commission's recommendations for the reform of the year and a day rule will be released on 22 February. The rule currently states that a person cannot be convicted of a range of offences including murder and manslaughter if there is a delay of more than a year and a day between the infliction of the injury and the resulting death. The commission considered whether the rule led to injustice and whether safeguards would be needed to protect defendants from late or repeated prosecutions if the rule were to be abolished or altered by extending the time limit.
