In brief: The Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal

The Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal is striking off ever-greater numbers of practitioners. According to its annual report for 1998/99, 81 solicitors were struck off the Roll over that 12-month period – an increase of 39 per cent (only 58 were removed in the previous year). It is also the largest amount of solicitors struck off since 1994/5, when 89 were removed. Over 100 solicitors were fined this year, 29 more than last year. The total amount of fines was £328,500, nearly £100,000 more than last year. Individual penalties ranged from £500 to £15,000.
