The Law Society has continued its campaign against the Government's plans for reforming legal aid, labelling its draft funding code "flawed and inappropriate". President Michael Mathews says that under the code, which will determine how legal aid is to be rationed, funding will be decided according to the "crude" financial value of a case, rather than the importance to an individual. "If the new code goes ahead unchanged, it will create gaping holes in the legal aid safety net. In family cases, for example, a bureaucrat will decide whether a divorced parent has a right to fight for contact with their child," he says.
