Home Secretary Jack Straw has decided to allow the Law Society to continue to regulate immigration solicitors. His immigration white paper, which was published last week, proposes the setting up of a body to regulate non-lawyer advisers but says the government is still considering "the extent to which members of the legal profession should be subject to regulation". It also proposes restrictions on the availability of legal aid, a single right of appeal for asylum seekers and bail proceedings for asylum seekers after seven days in detention.
