Chair of the Bar Peter Goldsmith has strongly criticised the Crown Prosecution Service for its failure to check the details of Treasury Council remuneration prior to briefing the Attorney General. Sir Nicholas Lyell was forced to retract his claims that two Treasury counsel earned more than £400,000, one of whom earned more than £500,000 per year. Correct figures for the year to March 1995 show 10 counsel were paid more than £200,000 by the CPS. Six earned more than £200,000. Three earned £250,000 to £300,000 and three received £350,000 to £400,000.
