The Lord Chief Justice, Lord Bingham, has called for the abolition of mandatory life sentences for murder. Last Friday he told an audience of senior police officers at the Police Staff College that mandatory sentences should be replaced with a discretionary maximum penalty of life imprisonment. Claiming the backing of the senior judiciary, he asked the Government to "re-examine the merits of this important issue".
