In brief: Auditor general airs doubts on legal aid

The comptroller and auditor general Sir John Bourn has qualified his opinion on the Lord Chancellor's Department account for criminal legal aid for the fifth year running. The National Audit Office said although there had been large improvements, in 1995-96 there were still wide variations in performance between individual magistrates' courts which grant criminal legal aid.
