South Africa's two main professional legal bodies have apologised for failing to prevent human rights abuses during the apartheid era. In their submission to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, the Association of Law Societies said it let down people who were victimised under white rule. The General Council of the Bar said that its members had challenged injustices but that they could have done more to expose the regime's shortcomings.
