Amid the money, suits and skyscrapers of the London legal world, it’s heartening to meet a man still in touch with his humble roots. And Nigel Savage, chief executive of the College of Law, is that man.
When it comes to a working lunch, there will be no dim sum or sushi at the Savage dining table. Instead, and in humble recognition of his workingclass heritage, lunch for Savage consists of a sarnie and a hard-boiled egg from a miner’s snap tin.
“Snap is South Yorkshire slang for your sandwiches,” Savage explains. “This tin is an heirloom from my uncle who worked down a pit and survived the 1953 Cresswell pit disaster.” He may not have inherited the profession, but at least he inherited the diet.
