Hugh James launches sports dept

South Wales firm Hugh James Ford Simey has set up a specialist sports law department.

Existing clients include sprinters Colin Jackson and Linford Christie and boxer Nicky Piper. The firm’s work for the Welsh Rugby Union and Wales Millennium Stadium has included the contract work to build the stadium, securing the 1999 Rugby World Cup for Wales and involvement in major events at the stadium, such as the FA Cup and the Football League finals.

The new department aims to provide a one-stop shop for amateur and professional sports players, organisations and clubs. Areas of expertise include player and administration contracts, development and interpretation of governing body rules, eligibility and immigration, marketing and sponsorship deals and event staging and tax.

Head of the department Bill Snowdon says: “The complexity of sports law has seen a sharp increase in the amount of sportsmen and women coming to us.”
