The Solicitors' Regulation Authority, which only launched in January, has done its utmost to win friends and influence the profession since its inception. But it pulled off a masterstroke when it charged 36,000 solicitors too much on their contributions to the compensation fund.

Nevermind. The Law Society is leaping to the rescue to investigate how it all went quite so pear-shaped. We await the results with bated breath. Meanwhile, several thousand clients chuckle at the irony of lawyers being over-charged.
