| A force of nature within Mayer Brown Rowe & Maw,
UK managing partner Paul Maher had a tumultuous
year. After a prolonged series of internal debates
regarding the governance of the top 10 global firm,
Maher became first in line for succession to the top
job when a new three-partner chairmanship was
unveiled in October 2006.
Maher also won an internal battle on the structure
of partnership remuneration, with the firm
effectively adopting the UK model in October.
Maher’s continued rise to prominence is evidence
that, despite the experience of many other firms,
the smaller UK end of a transatlantic merger does
not necessarily have to be the junior partner.
