Commercial litigation partner Nick Valner
had a busy 2006, handling several large and
high-profile claims for his roster of legendary music
clients.
In December 2005 Valner and US firm
Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal attacked record
giant EMI on behalf of The Beatles in London and
New York, suing for unpaid royalties.
Valner was in court again in March this year on
behalf of Bob Marley’s estate and Universal Island
Records to defend a suit brought by the estate of
Marley’s former guitarist Aston ‘Familyman’ Barrett.
The claim was thrown out in May.
At the same time Valner was involved in the
biggest trademark dispute of the year between
Apple Computers and Apple Corps. Although that
judgment went against his client Apple Corps in
May, the case helped keep Valner and his practice in
the public eye, making him a key part of Eversheds’
profile-building efforts.
