| Four years after joining private client specialist
Withers, Lucie Alhadeff found herself on one of the
biggest divorce cases of the year. Alhadeff
supported firm chairman Diana Parker in
representing Melissa Miller, one of two wives
fighting for the right to hefty settlements with their
ex-husbands.
Miller’s case, brought in conjunction with that of
Julia Macfarlane, hit the headlines and the law
reports because of the unprecedented size of the
awards given to the wives. Withers fought Miller’s
case to the House of Lords after her husband, Alan,
appealed the £5m settlement awarded by the Court
of Appeal.
The Lords’ judgment, handed down in May 2006,
affirmed the equal rights of both parties in a
marriage, no matter how brief a time it lasts – a
truly landmark judgment.
