While finance partner James Butters might be a late
starter to the magic circle world, he has wasted no
time in making a name for himself.
Since joining Clifford Chance in 1999, having
spent three years as a banking and commercial
litigation barrister at Fountain Court Chambers,
he has featured consistently on high-profile
leveraged buyout (LBO) and structured finance
deals. He was promoted to the partnership in
2005 and now boasts an impressive client list,
including Clifford Chance marquee client
Barclays.
Butters has been active on both the borrower and
lender side this year, particularly in the leisure and
pubs sector. He advised Punch Taverns on the
financing of its acquisition of the Spirit group of
pubs, while on the lender side he advised Royal Bank
of Scotland on the financing for Mitchells & Butlers’
acquisition of a large portfolio of Whitbread pub
assets.
