Ashurst's relationship partner for Australian retail
property giant Westfield, property partner Hugh
Lumby looks to have secured the firm lucrative work
for years to come. Thanks largely to Lumby, Ashurst
is now ensconsed as the chief adviser on both the
White City and Stratford City developments.
Originally a key adviser to property group Chelsfield,
Ashurst and Lumby got a look-in following Westfield's
£585m acquisition in late 2004. The fledgling
relationship has since gone from strength to strength
on the back of Lumby's efforts, culminating in a highly
successful 2006, which saw Ashurst overtake Nabarro
Nathanson as the developer's firm of choice.
First Ashurst helped Westfield secure the crucial
high-profile pre-lets it needed to make the £2bn
White City development a reality. Lumby and his
colleagues impressed enough to make Westfield call
for a beauty parade following its buyout of rivals in
Stratford City Developments, which is developing, in
part, the London 2012 Olympic site.
Lumby's pitch bumped Nabarros out of the picture,
with Ashurst handed the mandate for all the work
relating to Westfield's development of the site
