Sudanshu Swaroop
20 Essex Street
Sector: Campaigners

20 Essex Street junior Sudanshu Swaroop has a flourishing commercial practice covering such areas as insurance and banking litigation. But his work also encompasses human rights, where he is fast making a name for himself as a vigorous campaigner around the world.

In October 2005, Swaroop had a role in the House of Lords appeal over the use of evidence gained by torture. He is working on two cases in the European Court of Human Rights regarding prosecutions against Kurds by Turkey. Earlier last year he filed an amicus brief in Columbia on behalf of the Bar Human Rights Committee over the way Columbian paramilitaries are being demobilised.

Swaroop is also working in Sudan alongside local lawyers to challenge the Sudanese government's record on human rights, and in particular the country's immunity laws. It is impressive and worthwhile work; expect to be seeing a lot more of Swaroop in this arena in the future.
