Bolt Burdon Kemp partner Jonathan Wheeler is spearheading a campaign that, if successful, will allow hundreds of child abuse victims to fight for justice in the courts.
Wheeler is head of the London firm's child abuse team and a member of the Association of Child Abuse Lawyers' (Acal) executive committee. He and Bolt Burdon Kemp are acting pro bono to drive Acal's time limit campaign onwards, but they face a Herculean task.
Wheeler says the law as it currently stands prevents victims from suing their abusers because of a fixed six-year time limit, which only allows an abuse survivor to bring a claim between their eighteenth and 24th birthdays. The campaign to change the law has won backing from the Law Commission, but needs support and pressure from MPs to force through the necessary legislative change.
Wheeler and Acal's persuasion will be key to convincing the Government to act.
