Hutchings, Chris and Higden, Matthew

At a time when most lawyers are content to batten down the hatches, Chris Hutchings and Matthew Higden had the vision and guts to jettison the safe option and launch a niche media practice. Libel lawyer Hutchings and music specialist Higden launched M-Law in October, after leaving Charles Russell. Although their move was undoubtedly bold, it was also an obvious step to take, as both lawyers' clients in the media industry are increasingly demanding top-quality advice at a cut price.

What made M-Law special, and what gave the two the confidence to go it alone, was the quality of the pair's clients. Hutchings' key client is Hello!. He has handled the magazine's libel work for more than 10 years and brought it to, and took it from, Charles Russell. Hutchings also advises French publisher Hachette, which boasts titles such as Elle and Red. Higden, meanwhile, was head of the music team at Charles Russell. His CV includes a stint as managing director of a music tour producing company. He also, incidentally, played bass on the classic 1980s hit It's a Wonderful Life by Black. Rock 'n' roll.
