Probably the most feared bankruptcy judge in the US, Judge Arthur Gonzalez has the power to allow or, more pointedly, veto the ever-growing lawyers' fees on the largest US bankruptcies.
In the past two years, Judge Gonzalez has presided over some of the US's more devastating corporate collapses, including MCI, the company formerly known as WorldCom. Thankfully, the company recently won approval late last year from the judge to emerge from bankruptcy protection.
It was Judge Gonzalez's no-nonsense approach to the meandering Enron case that has kept him in the headlines. Keen to protect creditors hit by the fall of the disgraced energy trader, he is undoubtedly keeping his eye on advisory fees, which if reports are to be believed have already reached $500m (£282.8m) and are expected to double by 2006. US lawyers had better have their billings up to date and ship shape - Judge Gonzalez does not suffer fools gladly.
