It is fair to say that Peter Freeman is not everybody's cup of tea. One of competition law's elder statesman, he has been around the block enough times to make a few enemies. Regardless of that, his appointment to the Competition Commission this year was almost universally well-received by competition lawyers. Appointed as deputy chairman, he is thought to be in line for the chairman's job when the incumbent Sir Derek Morris retires.
The move into the public sector crowns the career of a well-known maverick who built up Simmons & Simmons' competition practice with his bare hands. The competition team never gained much in the way of referrals from Simmons's corporate department, but it did not stop Freeman creating one of London's most rated competition practices.
