Andrew Caldecott QC's profile enjoyed a boost when he appeared for the BBC in the Hutton Inquiry. The libel silk was tasked with defending the BBC from Alastair Campbell's onslaught following Andrew Gilligan's "sexing up" reports. The proof of Caldecott's success will lie in Lord Hutton's conclusions, but observers praise his adroit handling of Campbell.
In 2003, he also acted, unsuccessfully, for the Foreign & Commonwealth Office in Lord Ashcroft's high-profile battle to get the Government department to admit that it held false information on him.
His strong ties with the Government saw him take on and win a landmark case for the Attorney-General, guaranteeing child killer Mary Bell lifetime and worldwide anonymity. The Bar Council also used him to fight a defamation claim from Swansea law firm Kearns & Co. Any spare time has been devoted to advising his various Middle Eastern clients and preparing Naomi Campbell's appeal against Mirror Group Newspapers before the Lords.
