Mr Justice Leveson is to become the latest Court of Appeal judge following the imminent retirement of Lord Justice Brooke.
Brooke LJ steps down on 30 September, and Leveson J will become a Lord Justice of Appeal on 2 October. Leveson J will also become the Senior Presiding Judge for England and Wales from 1 January 2007, succeeding Lord Justice Thomas.
Leveson J was previously a commercial silk practising from Byrom Street Chambers in Manchester. He was appointed as a High Court judge in October 2000, making his progression to the Court of Appeal much quicker than that of many judges.
Lord Philips of Worth Matravers, the Lord Chief Justice, also announced this morning (18 July) that Mr Justice Wilkie will succeed Mr Justice Andrew Smith as Presiding Judge of the North Eastern Circuit in January.
At the same time Mr Justice Bean and Mr Justice Cooke will become Presiding Judges for the South Eastern Circuit. The dual appointment has been made because of the high workload in the region.
