An airport departure lounge tells many stories, but the last-minute dashes for the door are surely the most interesting. Gone is the golden age of air travel seen in flopped American TV series Pan Am - these days flyers on a budget are lucky to get free lavatory paper and a shot of tap water.
But aviation isn’t the only industry mourning a golden age. Bringing Herbert Smith Freehills down the runway, a number of high-profile litigators from legacy firm Herbert Smith have chosen to head for the proverbial departure lounge since the firm voted to merge with Australia’s Freehill’s in June last year.
Were these partners - the likes of Ted Greeno, who is joining US litigation boutique Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan, or financial services regulatory chief Martyn Hopper, off to Linklaters - given too many soggy sandwiches at that partner meeting in June, or did something else make them decide to pack their bags?
Now we don’t want to give it all away (we still can’t say for sure if soggy sandwiches were on the menu), but we’ll give you a hint that the mighty dollar might have something to do with it. Read more in this week’s feature, you’re probably waiting for a flight anyway.
