This year, The Lawyer’s annual ranking of the largest UK law firms by turnover is available as an interactive, digital benchmarking tool. For the first time this will allow you to manipulate each data set against the metrics of your choice.
Pinsent Masons is set to make roughly 13 lawyers redundant in its employment practice in its third round of layoffs since merging with Scottish firm McGrigors last year.
The firm, which is restructuring and reducing the size of the practice, kicked off a consultation yesterday (10 April) that is due to end in mid-May. All levels of employed lawyers are potentially affected, excluding salaried partners.
The programme - covering UK offices - is the first round of redundancies since the merger to be unrelated to the removal of duplicated roles and the first to affect fee-earners.
It is understood that some part-time staff are affected, with the figure of 13 relating to full-time equivalent roles. The firm is also understood to be considering applications for voluntary redundancy.
Last summer Pinsents made 47 support-staff redundancies following a consultation (24 August 2012) and late last year confirmed a further 15 in its back-office ranks (7 December 2012). Both were post-merger integration moves.

In a statement, a firm spokesperson said: “As a firm we continue to grow and have made a number of strategic investments over the past 12 months in those sectors and markets where we see most potential for growth.
“However, like any business we also need to monitor our resourcing levels and recognise and respond to market changes. This is particularly true in the field of employment law, where market dynamics have shifted fundamentally. As a result we’re taking steps to restructure our employment practice to create a group that is the right size and shape to respond to the changed nature of demand across the UK and internationally.
“While it’s not possible to confirm exact numbers as consultation is ongoing, regrettably we expect that around 13 people could leave the group as a result of the restructure.
“This is obviously an unsettling time for all of those involved and we’d like to thank the team for the patience and professionalism they’ve already shown during this process.”
