Shearman & Sterling’s London office has been hit by the departure of highly rated M&A partner Jonathan Coppin for the UK arm of Hogan & Hartson.
Coppin, who joined Shearman four years ago from Norton Rose following a protracted search for a senior M&A partner, will head up Hogan & Hartson’s developing London M&A and corporate practice.
Coppin has most recently been leading Shearman’s advice to Nokia on the merger of its network business with Siemens. He said he was looking forward to starting up his own M&A practice.
“Hogan was highly attractive as there are very few, if any, remaining firms with a global platform, but without an established local M&A capability,” Coppin said.
The Washington DC-based firm has a small general corporate practice in London but is keen to develop its UK M&A and capital markets capability.
Garry Pegg, managing partner of London office, said Coppin’s hire was in line with the firm’s growth plans and several corporate associate hires were already in the pipeline.
Coppin is due to start at Hogan & Hartson tomorrow (7 July).
Shearman was unavailable for comment.
