Herbert Smith has launched an innovative campus manager programme to help strengthen the firm's links with law students at the universities it targets for trainees.
Under the initiative, which was piloted at five universities last year, Herbert Smith will recruit second-year law students to become campus managers, who will act as formal student representatives for the firm. The managers will then provide the firm with feedback on requirements of the students.
Herbert Smith has rolled out the programme to 18 universities, including five that the firm has not traditionally targeted and which have a significant number of students who have opted to live at home during their studies: Brunel, City, Leicester, Queen Mary University London and University of East Anglia.
Graduate recruitment manager Kerry Jarred said: "Universities that have a lot of home students usually have a high number of ethnic minority, disabled and disadvantaged students."
The firm has received 200 applications from students wishing to become campus managers and is expected to interview at least three candidates from each university.
