Herbies alliance firm Stibbe opens in Luxembourg

Benelux firm and Herbert Smith alliance partner Stibbe is set to launch an office in Luxembourg.

The new office is expected to open on 1 September and will be headed by partner Dirk Leermakers, who has been recruited from Luxembourg firm Bonn Schmitt Steichen. Leermakers will be joined by a team of three lawyers from his former firm.

The office will focus on corporate, funds, tax, real estate and banking and finance work. The firm hopes to have around 10 lawyers in the office by the end of the year.

“Our presence on the ground [in Luxembourg] will enable us to provide an even better service to our clients in the region and it’ll further enhance our alliance network with Herbert Smith and Gleiss Lutz”, said Heleen Kersten, managing partner of Stibbe Amsterdam.

“Luxembourg’s dynamic financial services industry, its leading position in the market of regulated investment funds and its growing reputation as the Delaware of the European Union have turned it into a must consider jurisdiction for many M&A and private equity transactions,” said Leermakers. “A firm with Stibbe’s stature, and the alliance to which Stibbe belongs, have everything to gain by now being able to include Luxembourg in the offering to their clients.”

Before joining Bonn Schmitt Steichen Leermakers was managing partner of Loyens & Loeff’s Luxembourg office and established the firm’s corporate practice in the country.

Stibbe has offices in Amsterdam, Brussels, Dubai, London and New York.
