Hengeler adds third partner to London office to strengthen private equity

German firm Hengeler Mueller is relocating private equity partner Steffen Oppenländer to its London office to boost its offering in the City.

The Slaughter and May best friend is the latest in a steady string of European firms to add capability to London in a sign of the City’s continuing importance as a hub for referral work.

Most recently, Hengeler’s Italian best friend, Bonelli Erede Pappalardo, with which it shares an office, relocated banking partner Giuseppe Sacchi Lodispoto to London from Milan (7 August 2013). Earlier this year, Iberia’s Cuatrecasas Gonçalves Pereira named Antonio Baena as its new London managing partner, also bringing in corporate finance associate Ignacio Buil to strengthen the London office (26 June 2013).

Oppenländer will be the third partner at Hengeler in London, alongside Martin Geiger and Daniel Kress. Geiger focuses on banking and finance as well as capital markets, while Kress advises on private equity, real estate, finance and restructuring.

The duo said that private equity had become increasingly important for the London office in recent years, and Oppenländer’s relocation would help the firm cover the practice area more extensively.
