Harneys funds partner relocates to Hong Kong

Offshore firm Harneys is relocating funds partner Jonathan Culshaw to its Hong Kong office as Asia continues to be a focal point for the sector.

Culshaw is expected to become managing partner of the office later this year. He will be the third partner in Hong Kong, alongside global managing partner Richard Peters and litigation partner Ian Mann.

The move follows rival Walkers’ decision to move global funds head Rod Palmer to Hong Kong late last year (16 December 2011).

Culshaw practises British Virgin Islands and Cayman Islands law, advising on the structure and maintenance of hedge, venture capital and private equity funds. He previously worked in Hong Kong as an associate at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer before joining Harneys in 2008 as a partner.

He said the firm was looking to “rapidly expand” the Hong Kong office through hires in order to meet growing client demand in the region.

    About time Harneys paid some attention to Asia. After Mike Gagie left Maples the office has been left to its own devices-- with terrible consequences. They've really fallen off the pace over here.

    No Chinese speakers representing firm at a senior level, and so the operation takes a James Clavell approach to strategising on how to conquer the Greater China market. Junior staff don't have depth in responding to questions as they have minimal offshore exposure to begin with. Staffing appears to be a revolving door. Whose brainwave was it to move the office to the Outer Kowloon side away from clients?
