Harbottles hires FFW telecoms chief; elects new senior partner

Harbottle & Lewis has boosted its broadcasting practice with the hire of Field Fisher Waterhouse communications group head Tony Ballard.

The move has come at the same time as litigation head Gerrard Tyrrell is appointed senior partner, after Bob Storer announced his retirement.

Harbottles managing partner Lawrence Abramson said: “We’ve been looking to strengthen the broadcast side for quite some time. We’ve always been very strong in the content side but we wanted to strengthen the platform and telecom side.”

Ballard specialises in telecommunications and broadcasting, and joins the firm on 4 June. Ballard has advised clients such as the BBC, Viacom, Orange and MTV. His team of associates is still at FFW.

Former senior partner Bob Storer will stay at the firm as a consultant, working part-time.

Abramson said: “Bob will be retained as a consultant – you don’t get to leave here that easily.”

Tyrrell was elected to replace Storer at a partnership conference earlier in the year.
