Hammonds has confirmed its name will not feature in the US and Eastern Europe if its merger with US firm Squire Sanders & Dempsey goes ahead.
A spokesperson for the firm said that in countries where Hammonds has offices - the UK, Europe and Asia - the new firm would be branded Squire Sanders Hammonds. But in regions where the firm does not have offices - the US and Eastern Europe - the Hammonds brand will not feature at all, and the firm will be known as Squire Sanders & Dempsey.
The firms first announced they were in merger talks in August (25 August 2010). In terms of turnover Hammonds is roughly a third the size of Squire Sanders - the US firm has a turnover of around $546m (£353m) compared with Hammonds’ £117.8m.
Earlier this week The Lawyer reported that the firms’ corporate teams have been working on joint client pitches (1 November 2010). If the merger goes ahead then growing the firm’s office in Hong Kong will be a key strategy.
The firms’ partnerships are expected to vote on the merger next week.
