Hammonds is continuing its push in Italy with the hire of White & Case partner Lorenzo Attolico and a team of assistants and the expansion of its office space in Rome.
Attolico and three assistants, two from White & Case and another from local firm Libani, will join Hammonds Rossotto on 1 May.
Attolico, whose clients include record company BMG, Sony PlayStation and Columbia Pictures, will join the firm’s equity.
It is understood that he was approached initially by Hammonds’ Italian managing partner Riccardo Rossotto and senior partner Richard Burns around a year ago.
Hammonds is currently in the process of moving office in Rome and doubling its floor space to cope with its expansion in the region. It now has around 80 lawyers in Italy and for the last financial year the Italian offices generated around £5.2m.
Attolico has been at White & Case since 2001, when his four-lawyer firm Studio Legale Attolico merged with the US giant.
Attolico’s exit leaves White & Case without an intellectual property partner in the region. However, European managing partner John Riggs said the US firm had no immediate plans to replace him.
“We have no plans to replace him right away,” said Riggs. “Maybe in the longer term, but at the moment we’re focusing on restructuring our operations in Italy, with particular emphasis on our core practices.”
Those areas include corporate, M&A (including tax and antitrust), banking and finance.
